Croatia isn't the first place one links (?scuse the pun) with golf, but there's
surely a boom coming. The sport indeed has a history here. In 1922, a decidedly
non-proletarian steel magnate built a golf course on the luxuriant Brijuni islands,
which were to become the summer residence of Tito. There was also once a beautiful
course in Zagreb?s Maksimir Park. But, since golf doesn?t exactly have working-class
credentials, the sport died here after World War Two.
 A
brand new golf course has opened in Krasic, twenty miles from Zagreb near the
town of Karlovac. Dolina Kardinala Golf & Country Club is a Swan Golf Design and
Croatia first and only 18 hole facility which should soon be joined by a hotel,
restaurants and commercial centre. Designed to PGA standards and with international
tournaments in the pipeline, the course should influence the development of the
game in Croatia. The club is the only one in Croatia at the moment which has its
own course. A Scottish professional, Stuart Callan, leads the golf academy there.
The only other golf facility in the country is Pula Golf Club, nine hole
golf resort built in 1922 in the Brioni (Brijuni) Islands archipelago at
the southern tip of the Istria Peninsula on the Adriatic
